‘Women of the Sun’ to vie at Hot Docs Festival

Iranian documentary film ‘Women of the Sun: A Chronology of Seeing’ is shortlisted among the 2020 official selection of the Hot Docs Festival.

North America’s largest documentary festival will host Hamed Zolfaghari’s doc in its upcoming International Spectrum competition section.

This will make first global premiere of the 87-min documentary which will be competing with 8 other docs from around the world.   

“A camera comes into an Iranian desert village and becomes the target of debate between a group of housewives in charge of a filming project and the conservative views that challenge them. As the women film their struggle for higher incomes and more personal freedoms, they use the camera to explore the changes in their own lives and their community,” reads as a description to the doc.

France-based Arte television network, which is the post-production sponsor of the film, will screen ‘Women of the Sun’. Arte TV hosts only eight feature-length documentaries from avant-garde directors from around the world.

Zolfaghari is the recipient of the Docs in Progress 2017 award of the 19th Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece for ‘Women of the Sun’ co-produced by Zolfaghari and Nina Amin Zadeh.

Hot Docs offers an outstanding selection of over 200 films from Canada and around the world to Toronto audiences of more than 200,000.

The 2020 event was scheduled to take place in May; but due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the event has been postponed to a later date yet to be announced.
